Overview

The course aims to equip students with English Language skills at both functional and academic levels. A communicative, task-based approach is used to develop student’s conversation skills, comprehension, grammar and writing skills.

The course is highly interactive and communicative, through the use of both written and audio-visual material and students will be engaged in discussions, written work, presentations and group work.

Full Time:

Levels 1 to 3

Each level: 2 months

Levels 4 to 5

Each level: 2 months

  1. Regular Class: 6 hours classroom lessons – 5 days a week
  2. Weekday lessons: 9 am to 4 pm
  3. Saturday lessons: 9 am to 4 pm
  4. Sunday Lessons (if necessary)

Part Time (Currently Not Being Offered) 

Levels 1 to 3

Each level: 10 months

Levels 4 to 5

Choice of words, grammar and organisation of points based on purpose and context of text

Conversation & Grammar

  • Opinions, agreements or disagreements.
  • Description of sequence of events in narrative or work process
  • Modal auxiliaries to convey ability, possibility, suggestion and imperatives.

Reading

  • Analysis of text to distinguish facts from opinions.
  • Inferences through context clues

Writing

  • Organisation of text through phrasing and punctuation.
  • Composition work on narratives and sequence of events

Certificate in English Studies- Level 3

Conversation & Grammar

  • Personal histories and description of places, people and events.
  • Contextual strategies to understand new vocabulary

Reading

  • Reading strategies to identify the main idea, details and prediction.
  • Figures of speech and vocabulary

Writing

  • Expansion and combination of sentences through use of modifying words, clauses and phrases
  • Organisation flow and coherence using transition words and paraphrasing.

Certificate in English Studies- Level 4

Conversation & Grammar

  • Narration of factual material, description and topics
  • Use and understanding of complex grammatical structures.

Reading

  • Use of syntactic and contextual clues in unfamiliar reading passages to interpret complex sentence structures and unfamiliar words
  • Inferences on author’s point of view and evaluation of facts or opinions.

Writing

  • Summary of text and note taking
  • Writing informal letters using comparison/contrast and cause/effect.

Certificate in English Studies- Level 5

Conversation & Grammar

  • 3 to 5 minute speech/presentation
  • Practice on Initiating and maintaining conversations;

Reading

  • Identification of main idea, details, writer’s opinion and own opinions
  • Paraphrases and summaries

Writing

  • Use of transition words, sentence structures and paragraph formats.
  • Use of a variety of tenses to produce clear cohesive texts in a variety of styles.
  • Summary of information in graphs such as pie charts and bar graphs.

Assessments / Written Examinations

Quizzes and speeches  : 10%

Progressive Tests        :  40%

End of Term Exam      :  50%

Total                          : 100%

Progression Requirements

  • A minimum of 75% attendance is required
  • Minimum mark of 50% is required to pass each module

Admission Criteria

  • At least 16 years old
  • Based on Global Scale of English or IELTS score, as determined from a Placement Test

All applications are subject to approval from Trent Global College.

Students can sign up at their competency level (Level 1-5) and progress from basic to more complex language work in preparation for intensive study courses or work situations at intermediate levels of English proficiency.
