Overview

This programme focuses on the factors that affect the procurement and construction of a building or structure over its complete life cycle, with particular emphasis on the economic, legal, financial and managerial considerations of the construction process. Once you have developed the technical skills required of a quantity surveyor, you will apply them to projects that are based on ‘real’ construction scenarios. This method of working not only gives you invaluable hands-on practice, it also allows you to develop a variety of transferable skills that will give you a professional edge when you eventually start your very first quantity surveying job.

 

Career prospects for quantity surveying graduates are excellent with many students securing their 1st professional position working for clients, contractors or professional practices after they graduate as there is a pent up demand. This professionally-accredited BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying at Liverpool John Moores University will enable you to secure a career in the construction related industry.

  • Weekdays lessons start: 7.00pm to 10.00pm
  • Saturday lesson start: 2.30pm to 5.30pm

  • Substructure – pile foundations, displacement and replacement, pile caps and ground beams, pad foundations. Basement excavation and construction. Reinforced concrete ground floor slabs.
  • Superstructure – Single storey framed buildings of portal frame and lattice girder construction in steel concrete and timber. Multi storey structural frames in steel insitu concrete and precast concrete. Cross laminated timber multi storey structures. Tunnel form and Slip form construction. Cladding to single storey and multi storey buildings. Roofing to single and multi-storey buildings. Structural concrete floors,- metal deck, precast concrete and in-situ concrete. Suspended Ceilings, Access Floors and Internal Partitions.
  • Services – Heating Ventilation and Air conditioning plant to industrial and commercial buildings. Electrical installations to industrial and commercial buildings. Lifts and escalators installation. Firefighting and suppression systems to multi storey buildings. Pumped systems of water supply to multi storey buildings.
  • Developing research questions, aims and objectives.
  • Research design and theoretical approaches – exploration of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods design and particular philosophical approaches.
  • Research strategies – including case study research, survey research, and observational research.
  • Research methods – data collection methods such as questionnaires, interview and secondary data analysis.
  • Ethical principles in research – how to conduct research ethically and responsibly.
  • This module will facilitate the learning process by enabling students to apply previously gained knowledge and theory in a practical context, working collaboratively using a 3D model on a BIM enabled project in order to negotiate decisions in relation to specific tasks. Within the module itself the following areas will be considered and applied to the project: BIM software technologies, negotiation skills, sustainable design, cost, programme and legal considerations.
  • Introduction to stakeholders and stakeholder mapping. Strategies for stakeholder engagement. Philosophy of procurement, public and private clients. Risks inherent in the various procurement, contract and tendering options and their associated available contracts.
  • Basic principles of construction contracts – parties/personnel, standard forms of construction contract with reference to JCT Standard Building Contract and the Engineering and Construction Contract.
  • Risk and responsibility inherent in a variety of standard forms of contract in relation to time, payment, quality and design.
  • Introduction to International Forms of Contract.
  • Discharge of Contracts, Measure of damages and Insolvency.
  • Letters of Intent.
  • Pre-tender planning, pre-contract planning and contract planning

Assessments / Written Examinations

All Modules will have mixture of course work, assignments and examination.

Examinations are held thrice yearly.

Progression Requirements

  • A minimum of 75% attendance is required
  • Minimum mark of 40% is required to pass each module

Admission Criteria

Year 1 Entry:

  • ‘A’ level holders will have to complete the programme over 24 months, starting from year 1.

Year 2 Entry:

  • A relevant Polytechnic Diploma (or Equivalent) in the built environment discipline.
  • Advanced Diploma in Quantity Surveying by Trent Global College of Technology and Management.
  • Other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University.

Language Proficiency : English O  Level min. C6.
